Hello everyone out there on Minds, Animeman73 here. It’s time for another #IBASwordtember challenge.
As always, I’d like to thank Inessa Burnell for initiating this wonderful challenge. And for day 8, the word/subject: Water
For this one, we’re delving into the realm of urban fantasy. Get ready for a vignette from the world of a police unit known as Mage Squad. Let the urban fantasy goodness begin.
The Blade's Hope police training room was quiet, save for a single person. A woman with maple brown hair stood at the center of the room concentrating on the bucket of water before her.
Have to get this right. Can't screw up now when I'm so close. Officer Tatanya Braxis thought.
Yet despite her efforts the tendrils of magic passed through the water. "Can't concentrate! No matter how hard I try I can't get it right damn it!" She snapped.
"I thought I'd find you here officer Braxis." A voice called to her.
The Half-Elf woman turned to her right.
Approaching her was a chocolate brown skinned man in business attire. Decorating the man's face were a pair of wire-rimmed glasses, and a trimmed mustache.
Tatanya stood at attention as she saluted. "Chief Blackwing sir!" she stated.
“At ease Officer Braxis.” He told her.
The woman went to at ease position.
“Working on that skill again?” He asked.
Her face took on a sheepish look. “Yes sir, at least trying to sir.”
“You’re having difficulty concentrating, aren’t you?” He pointed out.
“I am. Even after all this time, it’s still strange seeing you in your human form. Your true form I dare say is far more intimidating.”
He smirked. “We Dragons are very powerful and I’m well aware of that fact.”
“You surprise me with your ability to read people sir.” She observed.
Chief Vander Blackwing nodded in understanding. “When you’ve had 450 years, you pick up on various humanoid quirks. And since this is my unit, I like to keep an eye on mu people. What troubles you so officer Braxis?”
Tatyana sighed. “I love being on Mage Squad sir, but I’m having the same doubts Morgan had. No, I’m not affected by some kind of spell but…”
“You’re thinking that you don’t belong on such an elite team?” The Dragon in human form ventured.
She gave a sheepish nod of confirmation. “I thought as much.” She heard him mutter.
He then looked her square in the eye. “Consider this, why would I have chosen you for Mage Squad if I didn’t think you were worth it? I trust in your abilities with water magic!
"And I know you’ll overcome your past demons, as Morgan overcame his.”
Tatanya shivered. “I still remember that. Poor guy, he almost lost the man he loved and their son to a psycho in activist clothing.”
“All I can say is like him, think about those you respect. Ask yourself, are they worth defending?”
The Chief of Mage Squad withdrew. Tatyana turned back to her training. Her mind raced over what Vander Blackwing had said.
Is Mage Squad worth it? Is this fight and this unit worth my time and effort? The Half-Elf woman thought as she tried to concentrate.
At first nothing happened, and Tatanya felt the frustration begin to set in. But then she felt the answer hit her head on, Vander Blackwing was no fool.
Why would he have hired her if he didn’t believe in her?
A new sense of understanding and confidence rose up in her as she channeled her energy.
The tendrils of magic wrapped around the water, and lifted it from the bucket.
With careful invisible hands she shaped and formed the water even as she condensed it with her magic.
Finally, she had shaped a sword. Reaching out she grasped at it. She found that the sword made of water stayed together. She gave the sword a few test swings and found that no droplets went any direction.
A dummy appeared in front of her. Without a word Tatanya took a swing, and the water sword cleaved right through.
The top of the dummy slipped off and crashed to the ground.
Sweaty but satisfied the olive-skinned woman floated the sword of water to the bucket. It broke down and splashed into it.
The woman sighed in relief, drained yet happy. “You see, you can do it.” She heard the dragon say.
“Thanks for the test dummy sir. But how are…” She started to ask.
Before she could finish, she saw the test dummy reshape itself into its whole form. She looked on the Chief of Mage Squad who smirked. “Magical Law 17. Matter and molecules can only change.”
The woman smiled and said, “Thanks for your help and your show of confidence sir.”
Then her cell phone rang. She pulled it from a pocket of her sweatpants. “Officer Braxis here,” she answered.
She heard the voice on the other side. “Lieutenant Dexx, what’s going on?”
She listened. “A robbery at the Third Interstate Bank on Halthorne street. I’ll get changed and be back to the station as quick as possible sir.”
She flipped her phone closed. “Duty calls Chief.”
The half-elf woman turned and headed for the women’s room the get showered and changed into her police
