“Ooh these sugar cookies smell great!” noted baker Gregory Masters.
He withdrew a steel tray full of them from the large oven.
Mike Grendell, his co-worker at the local Safeway bakery looked over them. “How do you do it man? How do you make these custom shaped sugar cookies?”
Greg smirked. “It’s all about honing my skills and loving what it is that I do.”
Mike nodded. “Based on the high praise the boss has given I can see why.”
Greg set the tray on a counter to let the cookies cool. He then went back to the oven. Opening it, he withdrew another tray and set it on the counter. “And that’ll be the last of them.” Greg noted.
“So, what do we do now?” Mike asked.
“We wait for these tasty things to cool then decorate them with our special frosting.”
Without a word Mike went over to a cupboard. He opened it and withdrew the container of the special frosting their store made. Greg commented. “We have to stand out from the other stores somehow.”
They looked over the cookies shaped like swords, maces, shields, and even axes. “Dude, you’ve been enjoying making this special order a little too much.” Mike joked.
Greg chuckled and added. “Well, a little bit. I am after all a quintessential medieval nerd.”
“Which reminds me, got a question. Are you still planning on going to the upcoming renaissance fair out in Pendleton?” Mike asked.
Greg nodded. “That’s the plan. Wouldn’t miss the renaissance fair for anything. My friend John's going to be there with his tavern, and his special Ale.
“Some other friends from the Society for Creative Anachronisms will be there too. They're going to have some swordfights there.”
Mike gaped, “Wait, actual swordfights?”
Greg nodded. “Some of the guys have been working on the choreography for weeks.”
“You planning to make your own set of medieval cookies to take down there?” Mike asked.
Gregory snickered and chimed, “You would expect this baker to do anything else?”
Mike sighed and commented, “You know, next year I should go with you to the renaissance fair. It’s not like much is happening around Redmond at the moment.”
The two checked over the cookies. “I’d say give it another minute or two to let them cool off.” Greg noted.
“A Medieval fantasy party for a customer. It’s interesting times we’re living in.” Mike quipped.
“A baker who can make custom cookies and cakes is definitely a skill sought after in these crazy days.” Greg answered.
“You ever consider opening up your own business?” Mike asked. “If you ever do, I’d be happy to come work with you.”
Greg shook his head. “In all honesty, I don’t have the patience for it. I love making custom cookies and cakes that’s all. The financial stuff kind of escapes me.”
A few minutes passed and then they checked on the cookies. “Gregory nodded and stated, “Yeah, we can start decorating these things now. Be careful, we have to do this right.”
Mike chuckled and answered, “I know, I know. I’m pretty good with frosting cookies, that’s why they have me do this whenever I’m here.”
“Hey,” the two heard a female voice call.
A middle-aged woman with short cropped blonde hair dressed in white and a white cap walked into the bakery. “You two screwing off again?” she said, her tone indicating she was teasing them.
Greg shook his head. “Nope, about to coat the sugar cookies Mandy.” He explained.
The woman looked over them. “Great job as always Gregory. Glad I caught you two, the customer gave us a ring.
He said he’s going to be here in an hour rather than an hour and a half. So, you might want to get on frosting those cookies, then packaging them.”
Greg and Mike’s eyes widened. “Ooh,” Greg yelped. “Yes ma’am.”
The two hopped to their work.
