Hello everyone out there on Minds. It’s Animeman73 once again. It’s time for day 23 of Inessa Burnell’s #IBASwordtember challenge.
For day 23 the word/subject is: Luminous.
Let’s see if my imagination can light you up with some escapism. As we return to the worlds of fantasy for this vignette. Enjoy.
Nighttime settled over the area of Carver Lake in Central Minnesota. In one cabin near the lake, Jayce McCoy sat in his easy chair. He listened to some classical music on the radio.
From an outward perspective, things were calm and serene. But inside, the man was a torrent of emotional strife. Danica, the man thought. Why can’t I seem to get over you?
It had been two years since the plane accident that had taken the lives of the 32-year-old’s wife and unborn child. His furniture making and repair company was doing well.
But his personal life couldn’t have been worse. Not even going out with friends or family had helped to ease the pain of losing Danica.
“Now here I am out in the Minnesota countryside trying to figure myself out.” The young businessman thought out loud. Looking outside he saw the clouds in the sky. They parted revealing a bright full moon overhead. The Moonlight shined down and glistened off the waters of the lake.
Jayce sighed and rubbed his head of short cropped brown hair.
“Am I that much of an obsessed idiot?” He muttered not for the first time.
Then a particular beam of moonlight shined down on the lake shore. Jayce gaped as he saw the beam shine down.
The beam struck the ground. Without another word Jayce threw on his jacket and went out into the cold and wet night. He found himself going from a walk to a run as he approached the beam of moonlight.
Why the Hell am I doing this? He thought to himself, as his legs seemed to carry him of their own accord towards the beam.
Before him the beam transformed into something. Jayce reached the spot of moonlight and his eyes widened. Before him lay a katana blade that glowed with moonlight.
The luminous blade had a strange feel to it. On a whim Jayce picked it up and he grimaced as his eyes shut. Images flashed in his mind in a painful blur.
When it finished, he fell to his knees. He trembled and panted from the overwhelming force. But one image stayed in his mind the whole time. Danica, I don’t know how but this blade is somehow connected to Danica.
Getting to his feet he gave the blade a couple of test swings, “Good balance, good weight, and good construction. Whoever made you knew their craft I’ll give them that,” he thought out loud.
He was about to return to his cabin when he saw the night sky brightening. Looking overhead he saw several stars coming down towards where he was. The five stars slowed as they landed.
The bright stars transformed before his eyes into people dressed in samurai armor. These people had grey skin, blue eyes, and pointy long ears. Why do I have this sinking feeling I’m in a world of trouble, Jayce surmised.
The elves conversed with each other for a couple minutes. One of them stepped forward and glared at Jayce. “Shino tonashi vichello!” He snapped.
Jayce’s face furrowed. “Shino tonashi vichello!” The elf snapped again in a commanding tone.
Another one of the elves grimaced and spat out. “It’s no use Lieutenant. This round-eared freak is incapable of comprehending our beautiful, sophisticated language.”
The first elf rolled his eyes. “Which means I’m going to have to rely on their filthy guttural tongue? How disgusting!”
“Up yours uppity asshole!” Jayce snapped.
The elves gaped. “Well, wonder of wonders," the lieutenant quipped. “It can speak! Give me that katana ape, do so and we’ll make your death quick!”
“I may not understand what’s going on Elf, but I get the feeling you're not the good guys!”
One of the elves lunged forward. “Give us that Moon Blade you short-lived piece of…” he roared.
Remembering his military and martial arts training Jayce didn’t hesitate. The former Green Beret turned businessman struck out with a quick slice to the chest of the elf. The elf let out a gasp and gurgle as blood flowed from his mouth before he dropped.
The other four elves with the lieutenant charged. the enraged businessman cleaved into the four elves as they drew their own swords. The Lieutenant stared dumbfounded at what had happened. From a coat pocket Jayce pulled a handkerchief and wiped off the blade.
“How is this possible?” The Elf yelped. “How could a mere human know how to use the Moon Blade?” he squawked.
“Never mind that,” Jayce snapped. “Where is she? Where is my wife?”
The elf’s face furrowed. “Your wife, who are you human?”
“My name is Jayce McCoy, now where is my wife?!” he snapped.
The Elf’s face paled. "What? McCoy? As in the rebel leader’s last name?”
That confirmed what the sword had shown Jayce. My wife is alive, somehow, she’s alive. The thought crashed into his head.
The elf pulled out his own katana sword and charged. Jayce rolled into a defensive stance and caught the blade as it came down in a chopping motion. The human pushed away the sword as he leaned in towards the elf. “Where is Danica?” Jayce roared.
“That’s not for you to know round-eared slave!” The elf spat.
