Interview with Hernán García
Hernán García, gracias por esta entrevista. Es posible que mis lectores no sepan mucho sobre ti. Tu carrera es impresionante. ¿Puedes contarnos una historia sobre cómo empezaste en el entretenimiento y qué te llevó a hacer documentales?
Hernán García, thank you for this interview. My readers may not know much about you. Your career is impressive. Can you tell us a story about how you got started in entertainment and what led you to make documentaries?

Comencé estudiando cine en Buenos Aires, Argentina, lugar donde nací. Luego compré una cámara en un viaje a Panamá e indagué con ella como si fuera un turista mas. Al otro año volví con el deseo de hacer un documental con la temática indígena. Filmé con unos amigos un corto llamado “Lectoescritura Ngabe”, que luego dió paso a “Tabasará” un largometraje que filmé desde el 2012 al 18 y que aún no doy por finalizado. Lo llamo el documental vivo En 2017 renuncié a mi trabajo y decidí volver a Panamá después de 3 años , pero a quedarme más tiempo, para hacer otros documentales. De ahí surgen: “El Otro Portobelo”, “Trapiche” y el final de “Tabasará”. En 2019 comienzo el proyecto de una serie documental llamada “Hay Algo Sobre el AGUA”, con temáticas socio - ambientales. Por ahora solo publiqué los dos primeros capítulos, en forma de documentales independientes. Ya sea por su autonomía y por la forma en que lo financié .El primero se llama “La Fuerza de los Ríos” realizado en la provincia de Chiriquí y el segundo “Detrás del Muro”, muy cerca de la Ciudad de Panamá. La pandemia hizo que tenga un freno, aunque realicé en Enero de 2021 en la isla Colón, Bocas del Toro, “La última frontera”. Luego volví a Argentina en 2022 para realizar tres documentales.
I started studying cinema in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I was born. Then I bought a camera on a trip to Panama and I investigated with it as if I were just another tourist. The following year I returned with the desire to make a documentary on indigenous themes. I filmed a short film with some friends called “Lectoescritura Ngabe”, which later gave way to “Tabasará” a feature film that I filmed from 2012 to 18 and that I still have not finished. I call it the living documentary. In 2017 I quit my job and decided to return to Panama after 3 years, but to stay longer, to make other documentaries. From there arise: "The Other Portobelo", "Trapiche" and the end of "Tabasará". In 2019 I begin the project of a documentary series called "There is Something About WATER", with socio-environmental themes. For now I only published the first two chapters, in the form of independent documentaries. Either because of its autonomy and because of the way I financed it. The first is called "La Fuerza de los Ríos" held in the province of Chiriquí and the second "Behind the Wall", very close to Panama City. The pandemic put a stop to it, although I did “The Last Frontier” in January 2021 on Isla Colón, Bocas del Toro. Then I returned to Argentina in 2022 to make three documentaries.

El Otro Portobelo es un documental sobre un lugar emblemático en Panamá, pero poco conocido en su profundidad. Son dos historias contadas en paralelo. Una sobre el taller Portobelo, lugar donde realizan obras de arte desde 1995 y la otra es sobre “La escuelita del ritmo”, una escuela de música para jóvenes de la zona que funciona como refugio para algunas de sus problemáticas sociales.
The Other Portobelo is a documentary about an emblematic place in Panama, but little known in its depth. They are two stories told in parallel. One about the Portobelo workshop, a place where they have been making works of art since 1995, and the other is about “La escuelita del rhythm”, a music school for young people in the area that works as a refuge for some of their social problems.

¿Puedes hablar sobre alguna película que estés haciendo? Can you talk about any movies you're making?
The first is in the post-production stage and the other two are in the assembly and editing stage. All fully recorded. “Los Trovadores del Norte”, biographical-musical, about a legendary Rosario folklore group that has been in existence for 65 years. “Ríos to Rivers”, socio-environmental, traveling, about a group of young environmentalists who cross the province of Misiones through the Paraná River in canoes without being professional rowers. The documentary shows the pollution that exists when approaching a large dam. "El Otro Cosquín" is a socio-environmental documentary made in a town in the interior of the province of Córdoba, which struggles to take care of its environment from multinationals, while the focus is on the historic folklore festival that takes place every summer. .
El primero está en etapa de post-producción y los otros dos en etapa de montaje y edición. Todos grabados por completo. “Los Trovadores del Norte” , biográfico- musical, sobre un legendario grupo de folklore rosarino que tiene 65 años de existencia. “Ríos to Rivers”, socio-ambiental, de viaje, sobre un grupo de jóvenes ambientalistas que cruzan la provincia de Misiones a través del río Paraná en piraguas sin ser remadores profesionales. El documental muestra la contaminación que existe al acercarse a una gran represa. “El Otro Cosquín” es un documental socio-ambiental realizado en un pueblo del interior de la provincia de Córdoba, que lucha por cuidar su medioambiente de las multinacionales, mientras el foco está puesto en el histórico festival de folklore que se realiza todos los veranos.
¿Qué puedes decirnos sobre el proyecto en el que te divertiste más y una historia sobre ese proyecto? What can you tell us about the project you had the most fun on and a story about that project?
Siempre me divierto, porque en general elijo las historias y los lugares, sino, me adapto y la paso bien. Lo que más recuerdo son los 5 viajes hacia Kiad para hacer “Tabasará” Algunos resultaron intensos y a la vez apasionantes. Comencé a cambiar mi manera de pensar en muchas cosas.
I always have fun, because in general I choose the stories and the places, otherwise I adapt and have a good time. What I remember the most are the 5 trips to Kiad to do “Tabasará” Some were intense and at the same time exciting. I began to change my way of thinking about many things.
¿Puedes decirnos quién o qué te inspira como director? Can you tell us who or what inspires you as a director?
I don't have specific references, I like many things and many directors. I really liked Michael Moore, but we have different styles. Photographers like Sebastiao Salgado or musicians like Gustavo Santaolalla inspire me. But many other artists too.
No tengo referentes concretos, me gustan muchas cosas y muchos directores. Me gustaba mucho Michael Moore, pero tenemos estilos diferentes. Me inspiran fotógrafos como Sebastiao Salgado o músicos como Gustavo Santaolalla. Pero muchos otros artistas también.
¿Puedes contarnos una historia sobre tus otros trabajos: La última frontera? Esta historia es sobre Filiberto, un italiano que vive los últimos años de su vida en el agua, dentro de una pagoda que hizo construir frente a su otra casa. Fue una gran experiencia estar ahí, compartir con él sus anécdotas, ver ese paisaje espectacular.
¿Quiénes son algunas personas en el entretenimiento con las que has trabajado y quiénes son algunas de las personas con las que te gustaría trabajar algún día? Quiero trabajar con gente respetuosa y tranquila, para trabajar siempre en armonía. Muchas veces trabajé solo y me llevo bien con eso también.
Who are some people in entertainment that you have worked with and who are some people that you would like to work with one day? I want to work with respectful and calm people, to always work in harmony. Many times I worked alone and I get along with that too
Sueños: ¿cuáles son tus sueños? ¿Es decir, con quién o con qué proyecto esperarías trabajar o ser parte en el futuro? Mi sueño es poder desarrollar mis proyectos consiguiendo los recursos con mayor asiduidad y dedicar mi tiempo a perfeccionarlos y mejorando cada vez más mis herramientas y habilidades. ¿Qué consejo le daría a los aspirantes a actores/actrices? Que sigan su vocación, disfrutando el camino y sin esperar nada cambio. Una última pregunta.Sueños: ¿cuáles son tus sueños? ¿Es decir, con quién o con qué proyecto esperarías trabajar o ser parte en el futuro? Mi sueño es poder desarrollar mis proyectos consiguiendo los recursos con mayor asiduidad y dedicar mi tiempo a perfeccionarlos y mejorando cada vez más mis herramientas y habilidades. ¿Qué consejo le daría a los aspirantes a actores/actrices? Dreams: what are your dreams? That is, who or what project would you hope to work with or be a part of in the future? My dream is to be able to develop my projects by obtaining the resources more frequently and spend my time perfecting them and improving my tools and skills more and more. What advice would you give to aspiring actors/actresses? May they follow their vocation, enjoying the journey and not expecting anything to change. One last question.
¿Qué pregunta te hubiera gustado que te hiciera? ¿Y cuál sería la respuesta? ¿ Por qué no es popular lo que haces ? No lo sé, quizás porque me falta apoyo, porque no hago documentales con temáticas populares o que pueden ser incómodas para mucha gente. A veces mostrar realidades duras no genera masividad.
What question would you have liked me to ask you? And what would be the answer?
Why is what you do is not popular? I don't know, maybe because I lack support, because I don't make documentaries with popular themes or that can be uncomfortable for many people. Sometimes showing harsh realities does not generate massiveness.
