On July 25, 2015, Germany produced 78% of their electricity from sustainable, clean methods, marking a milestone in their journey towards energy independence.
The country, is leading the way in a global shift towards renewable energy that does not contribute to carbon gas emissions. In 2015, it is projected that they will have produced 33% of their electricity through these means.
“Regardless of the exact ratio come the end of the year, it has been made clear once again that renewable energy continues to gain importance in the German electricity mix," said Hildegard Müller, chair of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) management board. Germany is expected to produce 193 billion kilowatt hours (billion kWh) of electricity in 2015, which is 20% more than was produced last year. In October the country produced 47% more power than they did in October of the previous year.
“The rising share from renewable sources makes Germany less dependent on fossil fuels, thereby helping it to achieve its climate protection targets," explained Frithjof Staiß, executive director of the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research.
Not only are they doing a service to the planet by burning less carbon, they are an example of what 80 million people can do when they mobilize.
