Packing for a camping or backpacking trip can be quite overwhelming. One can rack up quite the list to ensure you do not freeze or starve in the wilderness. Then you have to lug what is essentially a small house to your destination, just to spend hours setting it all up.
A group of scientists from Switzerland tackled this problem head on when they developed a new kind of tent; one with the sleeping bag and pad built in.
Based on astronaut's spacesuits, it uses an insulation technique called “sandwich construction”. The human body gives off a lot of heat, but that heat often escapes conventional tents. This tent utilizes that heat through insulated fabric, keeping you warm all night.
The designers say the combo-tent can keep you a toasty 25°C (77°F) when it is -30°C (-22°F) outside.
With it's very simple design and super-light weight, the tent is attracting some of the most rugged backcountry travelers.
