The Roller Coaster that Made Me Meditate on "Fix It" Culture.

Read the article,

This 3-Year-Old Kid Has His Own Roller Coaster in His Backyard!

When I first saw the title and picture, a smile wanted to creep across my face, but an emotion of fear kept me looking like I'd just bit into a sour lemon.

I suppose the reaction was somewhat my cautious nature:

"That's pretty cool, but what if _____ were to happen?"

However, it didn't take me long to realize part of my knee jerk reaction was the fact that I live in a society that feels it has a moral obligation to fix 'dumb' with legislation.

I realized that I wouldn't set up something like that for my kids, not only because I wouldn't feel confident in it's safety, but because if it turned out to be unforseeably unsafe, I'd be the catalyst for a number of local or, maybe even State level, counsel discussions around what "we're going to do" to make sure that kind of thing doesn't happen again.

Legislation that might include restrictions for others in how they're able to use their property.

Legislation that might include licensing before one could use their property the way they see fit.

And, add to that the fear that if I did something I deemed a reasonable risk from the intent of creating fun for my children, and that risk landed my child in the emergency room, I could be in danger of losing my children for putting them at risk or, at the very least, have the state come evaluate my parenting and our family/home life.

I realized that I wouldn't take this risk, even if I did enough research to feel confident in my ability to make it safe.

I then realized, anew, that our government has too much power, and just how much that power beats out of us creativity, innovation, exploration, and a sense of our liberty - all things which always include risk.

When I wouldn't try something for fear of governmental consequences, I am a captive, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

Though, Kudos to this guy! What a bunch of fun his kid is having!
