The Basics of a Transmutation Circle
The Transmutation Circle -or Alchemy Array- always starts with a Circle. A perfect circle is required for any Array, as it represents circulation. Whether it be of energy or of material, circulation is at the heart of every reaction. It also represents the equality with which Alchemy is performed, you can only gain in proportion to what you lose. Unlike Magic, Alchemy is bound to the laws of physics, we cannot create or destroy matter and energy, only bend it to our will. Which leads us to shapes used in the Array.
The Triangle or Trigon, is the most basic of shapes used to direct a transmutation. It represents the Mind’s understanding of deconstruction of Matter into Energy, and then reconstruction into another form of Matter.
The Square, Quadrilateral or Tetragon, is the next step up from the Triangle. With the addition of an extra line and vertex, we symbolize our understanding of Dimensions (spacial and temporal awareness). If we understand how matter moves through space, and understand the passage of time, we can accelerate or decelerate both of these factors in our transmutation. If your transmutation produces a complicated reaction, that you would like sped up, or manipulated more easily, a Square is a better choice than a Triangle.
The Pentagon, adds to our Mind the understanding of Life. Life is a form of energy, that be harvested or used to effect a transmutation. The Pentagon is the shape of choice for the creation of a Philosopher’s Stone, or for performing Alchemy on plants by converting nutrients into Life Energy.
The Hexagon, brings to peak our understanding of Creation or Construction. With this shape we can synthesize new material with ease by using the individual elements at our disposal, such as making Steel from Iron and Carbon, or Water from Hydrogen and Oxygen in the air.
The Septagon or Heptagon, brings us understanding of both Creation and Decomposition. With this we could even delve into subatomic Alchemy, breaking down our material into protons, electrons and neutrons. Of course this takes great mental fortitude, and would require intense concentration. This shape is best used for dismantling complicated alloys, or deconstructing large objects with the purpose of reconstructing them differently.
The Octagon, the pinnacle of Alchemy. If you were to attempt Human Transmutation, this would be the recommended shape. It furthers our understanding of Matter, splitting it into Organic and Inorganic Matter. Couple this with our honed understanding of Decomposition and Creation, with the right amount of Life Energy, an Alchemist can create life from the base materials. This does not mean the dead can be brought back to life, only that a single human can now accomplish what normally takes 2 people 9 months to accomplish.
