For many users of Minds, they may not even be aware of Steemit.

Steemit is a blogging and social networking website that uses its Steem blockchain-based rewards platform for publishers, and curators.

Sound familiar? Yes, with the recent Minds update it has implemented essentially the same features.

One downside to Steemit is that it has a very real cost associated with creating an account, however the developers themselves pay that cost. It's based on the generation of the Steem cryptocurrency. So if many people want to sign up at once, there will be a bottleneck as long as several weeks or even a month before the account will be created, according to some people's reports and comments on related steemit posts.

However, even though Minds does not have this burden, believe it or not, Minds has some catching up to do. According to the Alexa website statistics, Steemit ranks only #997 globally and #1,157 in the US while Minds lags behind at #12,489 globally and #4,492 in the US with a recorded decline of traffic in the last 3 months.

Perhaps this most recent update bringing these two platforms closer to an equal service offering will allow Minds to shift further up the rankings.

Personally I see Minds as a much simpler platform to navigate and learn for new users. This can be confirmed with a simple Grandma test, which platform would be easier explain to your Grandma in order for her to make her first post. Minds has Steemit beat in that department by far. We'll have to wait and see where this goes and see which of these now very similar platforms succeeds where the other fails.
