Note: This review is on the film Annihilation. I know this movie is based on a book by the author Jeff VanderMeer, but I have yet to read the novel. In time, I may give it a try, but this is just a warning to let you know this is a movie review, not a book review. Also, I apologize for this review being kind of short; I started writing a month and a half ago, and just got the time and strive to finish it now (today's Sept. 1).

A few months ago, while trying to de-stress from work, I went to see a movie with my boyfriend and a friend of ours. That movie was Annihilation. The film, which is based on a novel of the same name, focuses on a former soldier and biologist who volunteers to explore an anomaly location that may be a possible threat to mankind on Earth. She does this in order to discover what happened to her husband, who had explored this area and went missing almost a year ago.

The thing I enjoyed about this film is how it was subtly suspenseful it was and that it was not another film that was expectant (meaning you know exactly where the film is going). It had unexpected twists and a plot that went deeper than most people feel comfortable about. In a way, this film is about evolution on hyperspeed. It's a scientific theory that brings out the fear and terror most people try not to think about or simply disregard as nothing but a figment of the imagination. Plus, the actors, in my opinion, did not overact or underact their performances; they tried to keep the dialogue and mannerisms as normal as possible. Yet,  it was just these things that make the audience a little unsettled, and it leaves them questioning "Is that how I would have responded? Is that how anyone would in a situation or situations these characters face?" As a final note, with the ending result of the film (being left open for a sequel, like normal Hollywood films do nowadays) leaves the audience intrigued and wanting them to know more about the outcome. If you want to know what I am talking about, I would certainly recommend watching this movie; it is one of a few of the movies of 2018 I have enjoyed thus far.
