People seem to have this idea that the path toward defeating the “enemy,” toward smashing the “other side” and to be on the “right side of history” is to figure out what it is that the enemy wants and give them the opposite.
Unfortunately, in the Trump Era this tends to mean screaming at people you disagree with.
Well, I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong. The solution to the problems we face in the world is not to give the enemy "what it doesn't want," it’s to overcome the polarizing ideology of “us vs. them.” Why? Because the world is more nuanced, and you’re smarter than that.
Let me give you an example.
You see that the environment is in danger. Temperatures are rising, the forests are being cut down, and endangered species are going extinct. This is all the fault of big oil and the incredulous, illiterate, Fox News-watching imbeciles on the other side. Right?
So, what are you going to do? The only things you can: take up in arms against the enemy! No time for thought; no time for conversation; no time for rational debate; it’s time for action!
But wait, aren’t you demonizing the other side too much? Who exactly is this “other side,” is it the oil industry, private bankers, or simply people who don’t hold all the same social and economic views as you? Are you really helping by shouting, accusing, and chanting in unison the slogans your group decided would somehow magically solve the problem, as if you’re engaging in some kind of Wiccan spell to dispel all those you disagree from the solar system?
No, stop. You can’t think that way. Not when the world “is going to end in 12 years.” Act. Obey. Chant. Anger. Hatred. Resentment. Your master-leaders are correct. Don’t talk out of line. Don’t think out of line. You are on the right side of history.
This is the way in which so many protesters seem to view the world. Now, I’m not talking about the intelligent and well thought out ones; we’re not discussing Noam Chomsky or Naomi Klein here, but instead their followers, the low-information, one-sided, college-educated, socialism-loving, social justice safe space crowd that sees themselves so highly as to have enough moral high ground to shout in your face that your way is the wrong way, regardless of whether they even know what your way is, and of course without asking.
There has to be some kind of pathology on the left that drives this, because it’s not new, just more intense. But what I can tell you is that this mentality always fails. Whether it’s the 1980’s “religious right” movement that sought to squash gay rights as well as freedom of speech on radio, TV, and in video games, or the modern enviro-mental fascist movement of the left that loves abortions, communism, and left-wing identitarianism, this form of movement always fails, undeniably, and inevitably so.
In fact, this type of in-your-face action, the “I don’t have to listen to you, you have to listen to me” thought train that now symbolizes the left, is what will inevitably bring them down. The reason? They’re thinking “what can I do that the other side won’t like,” rather than “what can I do to make things better.”
Nobody’s perfect, but those are two different things, my friend, and you’re going to have to figure that out if you want to make any kind of progress in your life. Political, social, spiritual, or otherwise. Or as an alternative, let me know how many people you convert to your side by shouting at them, chanting slogans they’ve already heard, and placing everyone you disagree with in the same category as Nazi’s, fascists, and Xenophobes. Realize that the people who are really causing the problems are on high, not your Facebook friends, family, and neighbors.
Or, you know, let me know how that whole “you’re either with me or against me” thing works out for you.
