Suburbs are terrible for people and the planet. The suburbs also have a dark history of white supremacy and settler colonialism that suburbanites still wrestle with today. Suburban design, a result of white flight and fear of perceived ills of the city, locked in a way of living and transport that is incompatible with the environment. The suburban lifestyle is not sustainable, both in terms of our well-being and our planet.

A massive heat wave has scorched much of Europe this week, with the U.K. shattering its record for highest temperature ever recorded Tuesday. Author and environmental activist George Monbiot's latest column for The Guardian is headlined "This heatwave has eviscerated the idea that small changes can tackle extreme weather." Monbiot criticizes what he calls "micro-consumerist bullocks" — an approach that presents "micro-solutions" to the "macro-problem" of climate change. "The only thing that delivers quickly and effectively is system change."

Biden’s climate plans bit the dust, just like Barack Obama’s. But workers are showing us how to organize for climate action where it counts. Even as our planet’s meltdown was becoming more obvious by the year, climate legislation in the United States took a brutal blow in 2021, as it did in 2009. If we want to avoid yet another déjà vu, then organizing in workplaces, with unions, and in working-class electoral fights is our clearest path. It will never be too late to avoid worse warming — and to organize where it counts 🌍 #OneEarth

Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are dead set on expanding commercial space flight, even though a single person taking one of their carbon-spewing joy rides will produce more pollution in a few minutes than people belonging to 1/8th of the world population will in their entire lives. #Ecocide
