Still Harvesting

I did a lot to put my garden to bed for the winter today, mulched, took out some tomatoes I had let linger, emptied some pots, put things away, and yes, got some harvesting in. Some might remember I tried growing peanuts this year. Honestly, it started rough with what I planted...See more

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, another season draws to a close. I for one have some winners from this past season, and a few things I don't think I'll be planting again. Some star performers: Beans - both the newly introduced red noodle, and my black turtle beans...See more

Garlic Bed Not much to look at but it's been a productive weekend. Planted about 200 cloves in this bed. We will be adding straw on top. We harvested more carrots and did some general garden cleanup. There are still more carrots to harvest as well as the beets. We also have about 14 pounds of eggshells to spread around.

You give, you get. One of the people in town that we gave tomato plants to gave me this jar of salsa she made from her garden, including tomatoes from the plants we gave her.

So many pumpkin vines...

...not a lot of pumpkins. But hey, I got some, so I won't complain too much. There is still one immature one out in the garden but I've got a frost warning tonight, so it may not make it. I think these were from some C. moschata Grex Winter Squash seeds I purchased. Both of...See more

Autumn Surprises

I had planted crocuses last autumn, but they didn't flower. I have them at the edges of beds tucked in here or there. The other day I saw some purple but thought it was a bean flower, and then later realized it was a crocus. I was just in time to gather the stamens. Just spotted another one today and quickly grabbed the stamens, hence why one looks dry and the other one is not. I'm sure you've figured out by now these are saffron crocuses. Might not be much, but I'll take it!

And... I meant to post this here.

October Harvest

My garden has been pumping out winecap mushrooms. Winecaps are interesting because you don't start them in logs like many other varieties, instead they do best on a mulched surface. Straw can work, but it isn't long lasting. Hardwood chips are better. I did a bed of leaves and hardwood chips in my garden pathways as mushroom beds and now they keep popping up. I missed a few, but now I check regularly and I've been getting them much younger. Need a bit of cleaning, but that's not an issue.
