Mermaid is an age-old Mythical Creature that has captured the imaginations of people for hundreds of years.

Mermaid In Real Life

While most people today associate the Mermaid with Walt Disney's Ariel, in reality, they are much more than just beautiful half-woman/half-fish. Here's everything you need to know about them!

What Are Mermaids?

A Fish-tailed, beautiful, alluring, and enchanting creature that swims in the water, has appeared in Mythology typically as sea deities or guardians of the ocean.

As a species, mermaids are often portrayed as beautiful women with long hair living in an underwater kingdom where they sing and dance with Sailors to lure them off their ships and into the water.

Another frequent theme is that of captured or bewitched humans falling in love with Mermaids when sighted on land, but never being able to consummate the relationship due to their inability to live out of water.

History Of Mermaids!

Mermaids have been a part of human imagination for thousands of years. From the ancient Babylonians and Assyrians to the Greeks and Romans, Mermaids were said to live in bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans.

The first depiction of a mermaid was found by Archaeologists on an ancient Sumerian cuneiform tablet that dates back as far as the 3rd millennium BC. The tablet depicts a fish-tailed god who is holding onto his rod with one hand and playing the flute while riding on top of a giant bull known as Triton.

Evolution Of Mermaids

The Mythology and folklore surrounding the mermaid have evolved over time, but there is no doubt that they have had a significant impact on human culture.

The original Mermaids were sea-dwelling mythical creatures. Over the years, mermaid sightings became less common because people began to think that they did not exist. Mermaids are now being described as having a fishtail with scales and fins, but only the front half of a human body.

Types Of Mermaids!

There are different kinds of mermaids: Sea-mermaids, river-, lake- and tree maidens, fire-, cloud- and mountain nymphs. But three main types of mermaids are:

1) Amphibious Mermaids

These mermaids can live on both land and water. They have the ability to breathe air and water, but they cannot hold their breath for very long.

2) Saltwater Mermaids

Like amphibious mermaids, saltwater mermaids can live on both land and sea. Unlike amphibious mermaids, however, these creatures do not need to breathe air; instead, they must stay submerged in salt water or else they will die.

3) Sirens

Another kind of mermaid is the siren from Greek Mythology who lured sailors with her voice to shipwrecks on rocks. Sirens can inspire adventure but can also lure people into danger if their curiosity gets the better of them.
