Respite foster care, also known as ‘planned breaks’ for children in foster care, can be simply described as short breaks for both the foster parent and the children. The timespan of these planned breaks can vary from a weekend to a week. It is very much beneficial for both the parent and children.

Some of the major advantages of respite foster care are as follows:

Helps in minimizing stress levels

Respite foster care can help in reducing stress levels. It is a known fact that taking care of a child can be stressful sometimes. You will have to look after them and ensure that they are happy and healthy all the time. If any problem arises, then it increases stress levels.  Respite foster care will enable foster parents like you to take leave from your responsibilities for sometime and enjoy life so that they can join their duty with renewed energy.

Spent some time with your friends

Respite foster care will enable you to spend some time with your friends and family members. You can engage yourself in those activities which you enjoy, such as going out for dinner, playing games or watching a movie with your friends and family members.

Additionally, respite foster care is also good for the children as they will have the opportunity to go out and interact with other people which will be helpful in their progress.

Helps in developing fostering skills

Respite fostering helps in the development of essential skills by giving the opportunity to practice and learn. You can learn skills like understanding children’s behavior, managing challenging solutions and collaborating with social care professionals. These skills can help you in future if you become a full time foster parent.

Opportunity to fulfill other obligations

It is quite likely that a foster parent will have other responsibilities and obligations, such as taking care of aging parent. It is very difficult to manage both the responsibilities. Respite fostering will enable you to take leave from your responsibilities as a foster parent and spend some time with your parents. You can also perform other responsibilities without having to worry about welfare of your foster children.

Types of respite care

There are numerous types of respite foster care. Some of them are as follows:

In-home respite care: In this type of respite care, a trained caregiver comes to the child’s place for providing proper care and support. It allows the child to remain in a familiar environment while giving the main caregiver an opportunity to relax and enjoy their life. This type of respite care can range from few hours to few days, depending on the requirements.

Centre-based respite care: This type of respite care takes place in a dedicated facility where children have the opportunity to participate in various kinds of activities and receive care from trained professionals. These centers usually have structured programs and resources for meeting the requirements of children with special needs. It provides a safe environment for children to interact with others.

If you want to become a foster parent but is also hesitant about it, then respite foster care is ideal for you. It will enable you to join your duty with new energy.
