The Laziness of Recoloring
Shout out to @Suitablybored for reminding me to make this blog post since it's been sitting at the back of my mind since learning you could make blog posts here.
This is something that I have been VERY vocal about for a while and as things continue as they do I will continue to stand by my stance because it only showcases how lazy people are on top of how easily bought some folks are.
A few years back when I was still using Tumblr, I bought into the whole race-bending thing and thought, at first, that it 'meant' something. That by doing it you were taking a stand but as the years have gone by it's made me realize that it's overall acceptance as a go-to has not only left, to quote Rippa, classically Black characters to be forgotten, but has resulted in some of the most pandering nonsense to hit creativity for a while. I'm getting less and less 'entranced' on race-bending as time goes on. I'm at a point where my stance on it is like 15% okay with it but 85% against it in that;
- I really can't stop people from drawing what they do and I don't want to get into the art policing type of shit that's already ruined a lot of things for most of us
- When it does work, it's more subtle and I tend to notice the people who make it work don't act as if they want blow jobs from Black folks nor do they act that the original version is bad
But I can only take so much from folks who race bend mostly Japanese characters and then act surprised when they see a LACK of Black characters, especially original ones. It's like no shit; you enabled an entire mindset that making original Black characters is pointless and the only thing that is worth it is recoloring ones. That's on fucking YOU and people warned you about this. Because folks ACCEPT recolors, that's all they're going to get IS recolors and for those who are ignorant to the original stories, they will celebrate for any scraps of 'representation' they can get which is why we have people celebrating a vice-president with a sketchy record but because she's somewhat Black, she's....GOOD?
Trust me when I saw it's complicated and often times boggling how the Black community worships skin color over skill despite having a VERY FAMOUS MAN WHO'S LIFE WE ARE CELEBRATING TODAY talking about how it's more important to judge on the contents of character.
Hmmm, like we haven't learned shit since the man's death if you ask me but that's a whole other can of worms.
I'm going to be completely 100% honest with you guys here on minds; I can identify with characters that aren't my age, my race, my gender, ect ect because I'm looking to be ENTERTAINED, not fucking validated. However, in the way things are going when it comes to this race to be more diverse and 'represent', all the fucking Black women are the god damn same. It's like how I was growing up that the Black girl was (sometimes) just a massive stereotype of what White writers thought Black girls acted and so it just came off as being a one-note character that acted and even talked the same. It's why I said that when it came to The Proud Family, I 'connected' more with Zoe than ANY of the Black girls because I WAS that nerd, quiet weird girl. So when I see race bends, they always apply those same stereotypes. Like damn, we can't have any other personality as well? Just the default 'Annoying Activist' one?
And can we talk about how those who are high on huffing recolors are fucking assholes to Japanese artists? You know; artists who don't live in the US and don't get engaged with our shitty politics and don't HAVE to, but fucking cunts demand that they do and demand that they take stories that are based around JAPANESE CULTURE and then write it from a one point-view of the worst takes of American culture? Japanese artists don't owe you assholes shit and as a matter of fact, NO ARTISTS owes you shit, especially if you're going to label them a racist and/or bigot and every other negative thing on the planet because they're not wasting their time bowing down to some spoiled ass American who is used to having people cower on them out of fear of being 'canceled'. The whole shit with the MHA fanbase was fucking enough because those losers don't understand the concept of Japan not being as multiracial as the US so it will NOT reflect 100% the way we see things here. So no, they're not spiting you if there isn't an ACAB BLM scowling intersectional feminist character to 'represent you'. You're just not the center of the universe so fucking suck it up.
Really, the whole recoloring shit is for money because as I and so many people have observed before, if they cared about the whole 'nonewhitecismale' demo, they would bring back those classic characters WHO ARE NOT instead of racebending for cheap bucks and then blaming fans when that shit does not stick. Like the shit they tried to do with Powergirl by making 'another one' that I thought was Bumblebee because they used the most generic design they could have used? And they killed her off anyway?
Yeah, so empowering. Mmmm, so diverse.
Like I said, there are 'diverse' characters who have been making original and more entertaining characters for years but attention seeking cunts made recoloring more popular and as a result they created their own mire where they will only get recolors. They had more than enough chances, and still do, have a chance to support original creators but after seeing the way they behave with given the option I have my doubts on whether or not they will learn anything, especially since a lot of recolors are done out of spite as an own. Why do you think they ALWAYS have to bring 'I bet White boys will hate this!!!' into shit? They couldn't make it more obvious if they tried that it's all about revenge with art, and it gets even dumber when the fuckers do it with OBVIOUSLY VERY JAPANESE CHARACTERS, get called out, and then keep trying to argue that the character is some how White or somehow represents White supremacy.
Just sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up. You never cared a fuck about our hobbies until you knew you could possible suck some money from it, otherwise I'd still be the, as they called me in middleschool 'White acting faggot.'
So yeah. I've dealt with these bitches before and they're all full of shit. Recoloring means absolutely NOTHING and they will never support Black creators unless they're ones that enable/validate them (read: Kwanza and every other shit spewing, constantly negative pro who gaslights fans any time they get but write and draw absolute GARBAGE)
