Trans Van Santos is an Azorean-American purveyor of “outsider folk” living in exile on a remote volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean that many researchers believe to be the remnants of the lost continent of Atlantis. He has been compared to Bill Fay, Tom Rapp, John Fahey and Nick Drake, amongst other outsiders, and counts amongst his fans members of Ariel Pink, Dead Meadow, Patti Smith Band, Rodriguez, Iggy & The Stooges, best selling authors David Shields and Sylvie Simmons, as well as Hollywood weirdo James Franco. He has released thirteen albums under a variety of alter egos, performed in nine countries and, along with Dead Meadow’s Jason Simon and San Francisco “spirit jazz” pioneer Dave Mihaly, is a founding member of the band Old Mexico. In 2018 he formed the Society of Outsiders, Mystics & Artists; a secret society of Anarchists who adhere to a philosophy of mystical and spiritual revolution, in contrast to the materialist and political concerns of many modern day Anarchists. The group claims to be an antidote to Anarcho-Syndicalism, Anarcho-Capitalism, Freemasonry, Neo-Liberalism and the New World Order but critics claim that they are “just out for a good time.”
