Mount Stromboli is located on the small island of Stomboli, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily. There are three active craters at the peak of Mt Stromboli which have been in almost continuous eruption for the past 2,000 years. Strombolian eruptions consist of ejection of incandescent cinder, lapilli, and lava bombs, to altitudes of tens to a few hundreds of metres. The eruptions are small to medium in volume, with sporadic violence. There are three active craters at Stromboli's peak.
