Kingfishers are generally found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Oceania, where they can be found hunting and eating fish. Some species specialize in catching fish, but others take on crustaceans, frogs and other amphibians, annelid worms, molluscs, insects, spiders, centipedes, reptiles (including snakes), and even birds and mammals. Most kingfishers are territorial, and can vigorously defend their territories. The giant kingfisher in Africa is the largest of the kingfishers, and can stand up to 18 inches tall, and weigh in at around ~14 ounces. The sacred kingfisher, along with other Pacific kingfishers, was venerated by the Polynesians, who believed it had control over the seas and waves. Above all, you have to admit, the kingfisher is a magnificently beautiful hunter....beauty is the beast :) ................................................................................................................................................................... #science #biology #nature #animals #education
