Here is a stunning photograph of the northern light hanging over the town of Ilulissat, Greenland. Notice the reddish band near the upper border of the aurora. This is fairly uncommon and caused by the excitation of oxygen molecules by the electrically charged solar wind buffeting our upper atmosphere. The reason it is relatively more rare in the norther hemisphere, is it takes a lot more energy to excite oxygen. Its not all that often the solar winds are strong enough to give us red aurora. ................................................................................................................................................................ #art #photography #nature #outdoors #news
