๐Ÿ“š 3. The beginning stages of learning to read start well before a child is school-aged. When a parent reads with their kiddo, they expose their children to language, both spoken and written. You might not think your child is looking and following along (especially those rowdy toddlers), but I promise they are! ๐Ÿ‘ถ ๐Ÿ‘ถ My personal favorite is the 'That's Not My' books. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Once your child gets to school age, you shouldnโ€™t stop reading to them. Read to them any chance you get. It helps build a bond that both of you will cherish as they grow and leave the home. ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘ง โ€œReading aloudโ€ฆadvances their speech, enlarges their brain, makes them happy, and helps them be successful at school and in life. It also gives them sky-high self-esteem. I LOVE the My First Reading Library. Once my student is familiar with basic phonics, I use it in conjunction with our other reading curriculum. It breaks down reading into bite-size pieces and progresses at just the right pace. ๐Ÿ“˜ As they progress through learning to read, they are ready for the next step: readers. Similar to the books in My First Reading Library, these books are leveled and tailored to your childโ€™s reading capabilities. ๐Ÿ“š Another big step: chapter books. A lot of chapter books out there are overwhelming to young readers. I really appreciate that Hey, Jack and Billie B. Brown build your childโ€™s confidence with giving them โ€œbig kidโ€ feel of a soft-cover chapter book without crowding the pages with small words that may be too advanced for your reader.
