In 1969, when African-American citizens in the United States were not permitted to swim in community pools alongside Caucasian citizens, Fred Rogers broadcast a very-public stance against racism and intolerance by inviting his show’s African-American character, Officer Clemmons, to cool his feet with him in a small plastic wading pool. Mister Rogers then helped Officer Clemmons dry his feet.
