Walter Hunt was an American inventor, best known for creating the safety pin in 1849. He designed it to quickly pay off a $15 debt.
The pin was made from a single piece of wire twisted in the middle to create a spring, with a clasp to protect the user from being pricked. Hunt patented his invention, but sold the rights for $400, missing out on a significant profit.
