This weekend, I product changed my AMEX Premier Rewards Gold card to the newly released AMEX Gold Card. I would have waited for the card to update itself on expiration, except that the limited edition Rose Gold version is not available after January 9. Another change for the new card is that it is metal like the AMEX Platinum card. In terms of travel hacking, the new card offers 4X Membership Rewards points on Dining and Groceries. In my family of 5, a good portion of our money goes toward those expenses. So, this should be a great benefit to us when summer vacation comes back around. Travel is still 3X on flights and hotels booked through Amextravel.com. All other spending is at 1X. Gas stations were dropped as a bonus category. They added a $10/mo dining credit for restaurants I don't frequent and delivery services I don't use. I activated just in case the addition comes in handy someday. Furthermore, there is a temporary 20% statement credit on dining for the first 3 months, which should cover tips. I have some travel coming up next month that should test this feature. I was not clear on whether changing from the PRG to the new Gold is considered a new account, making me eligible for signup bonus, or if it is a simple product change. I intend to find out. If it is considered a new account eligible for signup bonus, then it may be worthwhile My expectations for the new version of the AMEX Gold card are that my family will see an increase in the monthly Membership Rewards points haul. Dropping the fuel bonus category will be a minimal decrease for us given that we do not drive too much and have relatively efficient vehicles. UPDATE: No. It's still considered the same account and not eligible for the signup bonus. Shucks. I also asked if the 20% credit for dining is for new members or all members. The rep stated that it's for all members, not just new members. I am skeptical on that. I shall have to take the Mrs. out to eat and put it to the test.
