Geometric style Attic compass of 750 BC. Actually the name" compass is Roman, and was used to describe wide vessels with lids for storing oil, powder or other materials. After the collapse of the Minoan and Mycenean civilizations, 13th-11th centuries BC, the sophistication and happy styles dissapeared. That is normal, considering the fact that the population was reduced more than 75% in some cases. The reasons are still unclear. After the 9th century BC, signs of recovery are evident and new styles arose as well. Simple and austere. This is a copy of the Museum of Cycladic Art of Athens. The original resides in Boston. #art #archeology #ancient #ceramic #geometric
