The Church that He established during New Testament times was destroyed, and centuries later restored with the help of a very young Joseph Smith who was chosen to translate the Book of Mormon and get The Church of Jesus Christ up and running again: Teaching the Gospel, patiently perfecting the members, and completing proxy baptismal work for the dead that died without knowledge of the Plan of Salvation - so they too may choose in the Spirit World (after-life) to follow Christ by making covenants like baptism, or not.
